Secular Democrats of Texas

About Us

The Secular Democrats of Texas give voice to millions of secular Texans within the Democratic Party.

The Secular Democrats of Texas exist to give voice to, and to represent, the millions of secular Texans in our government.

We are not against religion. We advocate for equal treatment for all people — for freedom of religion, and freedom from religion — within the framework of the Texas Democratic Party. Everyone should be free to practice the faith of their choosing, and everyone should be free to live without religion imposed upon them by government.

Our beginning

In 2016, we held the first-ever secular caucus at the Texas Democratic Convention. More than 400 attendees packed the room, and the caucus succeeded in passing three platform resolutions. We have grown with every convention since.

We urge our legislators and party leaders to keep government neutral on matters of religion, and to welcome non-religious Democrats as full and equal members of our coalition.

What we stand for

  • Separation of church and state at every level of Texas government
  • Public policy grounded in evidence and secular reasoning, not religious doctrine
  • Equal representation and respect for non-religious Texans
  • Protection of religious freedom for everyone — believers and non-believers alike
