Why We Need a Secular Caucus

Secular governance is how we protect religious freedom for everyone.

Americans who do not identify with any religious organization represent the fastest-growing segment of our population — and they deserve representation in the decisions that govern all of us.

The caucus is not anti-religion. We believe every person should be free to practice the faith of their choosing in their private life, and that those who prefer to live without religious influence in their public life deserve that freedom too.

Religious freedom requires secular government

Ensuring genuine religious freedom requires secular governance. The First Amendment makes this plain: government and its laws must remain independent of religious doctrine. Only a secular government can protect both the freedom to practice religion and the freedom from having someone else’s religion imposed by the state.

Our goal

Our objective is to hold elected leaders accountable to these constitutional standards — to ensure that policy decisions rest on secular reasoning rather than religious considerations. In doing so, we defend pluralism itself: a society where believers and non-believers alike can coexist under a fair, secular framework.
